Images of Christ

This summer we take a look at the various ways Jesus is portrayed in the New Testament. The earliest believers answered the question, “Who is Jesus?” using stories, metaphors, affirmations, titles and word pictures. All were significant responses and together these responses contributed to the later development of a category of systematic theology known as Christology: the study of the nature, meaning and significance of Jesus Christ.
Over the next three months, you have the opportunity to begin a personal response to the Christological question, “Who is Jesus?” by studying three sets of images offered in the New Testament.
Unit 1
Images of Christ in Hebrews
The first perspective, developed by the author of the Letter to the Hebrews, is an extended analogy on the nature of Jesus as the fulfillment of the Old Testament. The approach is abstract.
The images of Jesus as son, intercessor, redeemer, leader and eternal Christ are worked out through complicated interpretations of Old Testament texts and principles of faith. This is Christology “from above” – a Christology that develops from faith statements applied to the person of Jesus.

Images of Christ in the Gospels
The second set of images is found in the four gospels and could be considered Christology “from beside.” These are the stories of the disciples and Jesus. Each author offers a unique point of view, but taken as a whole, these images provoke the feeling of walking beside Jesus. The observations are keen, the conclusion somewhat open-ended and the challenge to follow Jesus persistent. From the gospels, Jesus is seen as teacher, healer, servant and Messiah..

Unit 3
Images of Christ in Us
The Letter of James presents the last set of images through the life of the early Christian community. This type of Christology is considered “from below,” by working through the experiences of Christians to discover the reality of Jesus among them. The images in this final unit are personalized through the some of the compelling life issues of the first century.
These life issues provoke images of Jesus that resonate within contemporary Christian communities and promise to be useful for reflection and correction. So whether from above, beside or below, this summer’s study imaginatively answers the question, “Who is Jesus?”
