Bible Study

We are all called to follow God. It’s what we’re supposed to do. But what happens when He calls and it doesn’t make sense? Do this. Go there. Give up that… What happens then? What are we supposed to do when our plans get in the way of God’s, or vice versa? It happens all the time. We can look at our day-to-day and see when God moves and gives us opportunities to follow Him. Sometimes it’s easy. Other times… not so much.

Uncommon: Compelled by God’s Call is a 6-week series that has been created to help us understand, not only how to hear God’s calls, but also how to act on what He asks us to do. Through looking at real people like Moses, Joshua and Rahab, we can understand the struggles we all have with faith and gain new perspectives on how He can be glorified through our decisions.?

These are real, applicable life lessons and explorations into God’s Word that will make discovering all of His promises a comforting reality. Each week’s study will allow groups, large or small, to uncover a genuine understanding of spiritual growth, and they will each reveal an exciting look into how we all fit into God’s masterful plan… even when His plan might not be the most comfortable directions to follow.

Introduction

Have you considered that when God calls us, we have to take action?

Henry Blackaby stresses that we cannot respond to God’s call without moving to another place—physically or spiritually.1 This unit will take a look at six key encounters between God and His people. Each session
provides the opportunity to consider the requirements on God’s call on our lives.

Session 1 : Called to the Unexpected
Moses —Unexpectedly, God called Moses to service from a burning bush. Moses’ call was
to do something unexpected—face Pharaoh with God’s message to free the Hebrews. God does
not always speak in predictable ways when He calls us to action. How has God spoken to you?

Session 2 : Called to a Relationship
Moses —After freeing the Hebrew slaves, God initiated a covenant relationship with His people.
A covenant relationship is more than a promise; it is a way of life and faith. How has God created
that covenant relationship with you?

Session 3 : Called to Obedience
C aleb—Only two spies into the promised land recognized God’s power in leading the Hebrews
to victory. In response to doubt and disobedience, God imposed harsh consequences, but He
rewarded the faithful and obedient spies. How does obedience or disobedience to God’s call affect
your relationship with Him?

Session 4 : Called to Courage

Joshua —As Joshua inherited the responsibility of leadership from Moses, God encouraged
Joshua to remain courageous. How has your response to God’s call required courage?

Session 5 : Called to Trust

Rahab—As the Hebrews entered the promised land, the people there were filled with fear. However,
fear can lead to opportunities to trust God. How has fear impacted the way you trust God?

Session 6 : Watching God in Action

Joshua—The first battle in the promised land did not depend upon the strength of God’s army,
but on God. Even though God did not need help, He allowed the Hebrews to be a part of that victory.
How has God included you in His purposes?

Be prepared to consider, examine, and evaluate God’s Word as you move through this study. Our
prayer is that this study will give you the opportunity to understand God’s call on your life and
experience His amazing love in new ways.
